How do I add a website rule in VilaNet?

To add a website rule in VilaNet, open Settings > Split tunnel > Website rules; leave the default routing alone unless one website needs a change. Older guides call it a domain rule, under Settings > Rules > Domain Rules. After the settings redesign, a control you cannot find is usually under Split tunnel (including More routing settings) or Advanced Settings.

Custom domain rules apply only in Pac Mode on the home screen, not in Global Mode. A pattern such as *.example.com covers subdomains; example.com alone matches that one host name.

Add or change one rule

  1. Connect with the default routing and confirm ordinary sites load.
  2. Write down the one site or task to change, and copy the current settings.
  3. Add or edit only one rule. If VilaNet shows Changes apply on the next connection, select Reconnect now. On a router, reconnect if the screen says the change needs it.
  4. Test that site, and also load two familiar HTTPS websites.
  5. If either check fails, restore the settings from step 2.

Rule names and matching differ by platform. Do not copy an example from another platform. If the field rejects the pattern, stop before saving and contact support with the platform and the route you wanted.

A domain rule has three actions: Direct (green, bypasses the VPN), Proxy (blue, forces the VPN), or Block (red, drops traffic to that domain). Turn on Enable Domain Rules first. Older bypass entries were migrated to Direct rules. A warning appears if that domain already has a different action. A lock icon means you cannot edit the rule on this device. Rules sync across devices through Sync Settings. Gaming Mode is a shortcut that adds Direct rules for common game domains. For overseas game servers from mainland China, read which node to use for games instead.

WeChat images spin, or Telegram or iCloud media fails

On macOS this can happen in both TUN Mode and Proxy Mode. Work in order. On iPhone Wi-Fi, if a Chinese app shows text but images or video keep spinning, Prefer IPv4 does not fix it. Read that article instead of step 1 below.

  1. Domain Strategy is IPv4 Only. Open Settings > Advanced Settings > Domain Strategy. Change IPv4 Only to Prefer IPv4, disconnect, reconnect, and test WeChat images and sending a message. Use the same fix when only one ordinary site fails.
  2. The Mac DMG build in TUN Mode fell back to bundled rules. If the remote rule set fails to download, the mainland-China list is missing and Chinese domains go through the VPN until it downloads. The App Store build and DMG Proxy Mode are not affected. Turn on Use Remote Rule Sets, then disconnect and reconnect, or switch to Proxy Mode. A brief fallback can still happen while the network blips, so add the rules in step 3 as well.
  3. A direct rule has no *. prefix, or domain rules were turned off. Stay in Pac Mode, turn on Enable Domain Rules, and add these with the action Direct, one at a time. Reconnect after each one and test WeChat plus two ordinary sites: *.qq.com, *.qpic.cn, *.qlogo.cn, *.gtimg.cn, *.wechat.com. Without *., qq.com or weixin.qq.com does not match the hosts WeChat uses. Do not turn domain rules off to “fix” WeChat. If a rule is already there, add the *. form.

A small Chinese app fails in Pac Mode

When websites work but a niche Chinese app spins or reports a network error, its domain is often missing from the built-in China list, so it is sent to an overseas server that cannot reach a server inside China. Major apps such as Alipay or Taobao are a different case.

  1. Set the home screen to Pac Mode. Custom rules do not apply in Global Mode.
  2. Turn on Enable Domain Rules and add *. plus that app's domain with the action Direct, then save. If unsure, try its official site's domain.
  3. Disconnect, reconnect, and open the app. If it still fails, send support the app name so the missing domain can be added to the China list.

How to tell it worked

The site or app follows the route you wanted, two ordinary HTTPS sites still load, and VilaNet stays Connected. A saved rule by itself is not success.

Still not working?

  • Only the site you just changed fails: remove that rule and test again on the default routing.
  • All traffic fails: restore the previous settings, disconnect once, then read Connected but no internet.
  • On a computer you want a whole app off the VPN, not one domain: read Proxy Mode and per-app bypass.
  • Apple TV cannot add custom domain rules. The VilaX client cannot add custom domain rules either. Use VilaNet.
  • WeChat still fails: stay connected while the problem is happening, open Contact Support in the app, and include diagnostics. On desktop, the bug icon opens Diagnostics. Disconnecting first drops the live detail.

The procedure is also in Routing and domain rules.
