Why do Chinese apps not load videos on iPhone Wi-Fi with the VPN on?

If Chinese apps on iPhone Wi-Fi load text but not pictures or video while VilaNet is on, set Domain Strategy to IPv4 Only and turn off Fast IPv6 Fail-over for Apple Push; this is an iPhone IPv6 tradeoff that shows up on Wi-Fi. Chinese apps such as Douyin, Pinduoduo, and Tieba load text, but pictures and video keep spinning. Cellular data works, and turning the VPN off works. So that Apple push (for example Telegram) arrives on time on a mainland-China cellular network, VilaNet turns on Fast IPv6 Fail-over for Apple Push by default, which brings IPv6 into the VPN. On some home or hotel Wi-Fi, that IPv6 path is unstable, and those apps then fail to load pictures and video.

The steps below are for this iPhone only. Do not copy them onto a Mac where WeChat or a Chinese site will not load; use domain rules for that. Whether TikTok itself works is a different article: How to use TikTok.

Change these two settings on the iPhone

  1. In VilaNet, open Settings > Connection > Advanced Settings and set Domain Strategy to IPv4 Only.
  2. Open Settings > Split tunnel. If that screen is still labeled rule settings, open that screen. If you cannot find the switch, look under More routing settings. Turn off Fast IPv6 Fail-over for Apple Push. If a prompt appears, choose Turn Off Anyway.
  3. Disconnect the VPN, then connect again.

The cost is that Apple push, such as Telegram, can arrive a little later on cellular. You cannot have both. With the fail-over on, push is on time, but video in Chinese apps can fail on some Wi-Fi. With it off, those apps work and push is a little slower. Choose the one you care about more. No switch gives you both. Other VPN clients handle IPv6 the same way by default.

Before you change anything, check that all three of these match: on the same Wi-Fi, text loads but pictures and video spin; with the VPN off, pictures load; on cellular with the VPN on, everything works. Make the two changes only when all three match. If only one matches, do not switch to IPv4 Only first.

These do not fix this symptom

  • Setting Domain Strategy to Prefer IPv4 only, without IPv4 Only, is not enough.
  • Turning off QUIC blocking is not enough.
  • Turning off Capture All Network Traffic is not enough. That switch is for a phone with no internet, Personal Hotspot, and Wi-Fi Calling. See iPhone has no internet or Personal Hotspot dies.

Do not change the iPhone's DNS for this problem.

How to tell it worked

  1. After you reconnect, the main page still shows Connected in blue.
  2. On the same Wi-Fi that failed, open Douyin, Pinduoduo, or Tieba. Pictures and video load, not only text.
  3. If Apple push on cellular is a little slower than before, that is the expected result of turning the fail-over off.

Still not working?

  • Pictures and video also fail on cellular, or they fail with the VPN off: that is not this Wi-Fi tradeoff. See connected, but sites do not load.
  • Confirm you changed VilaNet on the iPhone, that you chose Turn Off Anyway, and that you disconnected and connected once.
  • If it is still broken, open Contact Support in the Menu, leave Include app diagnostics on, and name the app and whether it happens only on Wi-Fi. You can also open a ticket. Install steps are in the VilaNet iOS guide.
