On a supported Ubuntu system, download the official AppImage for your processor, make it executable, sign in, then run Install for TUN Mode once. AMD64 needs Ubuntu 22.04 LTS or later. ARM64 needs Ubuntu 24.04 LTS or later. If the app stops at startup with GLIBC_2.38 or GLIBCXX_3.4.32 not found, download the latest package from the downloads page and do not replace system libraries.
1. Check the processor and download
In Terminal, run:
uname -m
x86_64: download the AMD64 build. The system must be Ubuntu 22.04 LTS or later.aarch64orarm64: download the ARM64 build. The system must be Ubuntu 24.04 LTS or later.
Get the matching AppImage from the downloads page or the releases page. Do not run an unknown copy. You need an active account and administrator access for the one-time TUN setup.
2. Start the AppImage
- Open Terminal and change to the download directory, for example
cd ~/Downloads. - Run
chmod +xon the AppImage. The name shows AMD64 or ARM64. - Run that AppImage from the same directory.
Proxy mode works before TUN is installed. Use the one-time TUN setup below for a system VPN interface.
3. Sign in
Sign-in matches the other apps. See How do I sign in to VilaNet?. On Login, enter E-mail and Password, tick I have read and agree to:, select Allow on Allow minimal data to provide VPN service?, then Login. That dialog is not a failed login. Renew an expired or inactive package before connecting.
4. Install TUN support
- Open Settings. On Connection, find the Linux section.
- Read Running from AppImage, then select Install for TUN Mode. Selecting TUN Mode in that section starts the same install when the local runtime is not ready.
- When Ubuntu asks for administrator authentication, confirm the request belongs to VilaNet's TUN installation, then enter the password. That password is your Linux user password, not your VilaVPN password.
- Wait while the local runtime installs and the app restarts. Do not close the password prompt or start a second copy.
- After restart, confirm TUN Mode is selected. Later, launch VilaNet from the application menu, not by running the original AppImage again.
Do not keep running the whole app with sudo. If the password prompt never appears, install the graphical helper on Ubuntu and try Install for TUN Mode again:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install zenity
If elevation is cancelled or fails, TUN setup did not finish. You can keep using Proxy Mode for now, or keep the error and contact support. See TUN mode and Proxy mode.
5. Connect and check
- Select the server card to open Server Nodes.
- Under Auto-Select, choose Fastest unless you need a specific place. The app returns to the main page.
- Select Connect and wait until Connecting becomes Connected. If it asks for administrator permission here, finish the TUN install above and let the app restart.
- Stay Connected for a few seconds, load two familiar HTTPS sites, and confirm the status is still Connected.
Choosing a node does not connect. See how to tell VilaNet is really connected.
GLIBC_2.38 or GLIBCXX_3.4.32 was not found
Some earlier AMD64 builds fail on Ubuntu 22.04 with a GLIBC_2.38 / GLIBCXX_3.4.32 not-found error. Download the latest package from the downloads page. Your system is not broken.
Do not replace glibc or libstdc++, do not upgrade the operating system for this error, and do not install a newer libstdc++ from a third-party source.
If the error stays, use vilanet-cli. It is one static file, so it does not need the system glibc, and it can sign in and connect on Ubuntu 22.04. See How do I install and use VilaNet CLI? and cli.vilavpn.com.
Still not working?
- The AppImage will not start: match
uname -m, confirmchmod +xand the Ubuntu version above, and run it from Terminal so you keep the error. Download again if the file is incomplete. - TUN fails after restart: in Settings > Connection > Linux, confirm TUN Mode and launch from the application menu. Keep text that mentions
CAP_NET_ADMIN, elevation or the TUN device. - Sign-in or connection fails: remove extra spaces in the email, confirm the subscription is active and that sites open while disconnected, then try Auto Select once. Use Contact Support in the sidebar with Include app diagnostics on, or open a ticket. Do not send your password.
